Why I Refuse To Build An Email List As A Seasoned Blogger
Let’s talk about unpopular blogging opinions.
As a seasoned blogger, I do not build email lists.
Not because email marketing never works.
Not because newsletters are bad.
Simply because for the type of blogging I do — I do not need one.
And I think newer bloggers deserve to hear this perspective too.
Because somewhere along the way, blogging advice became:
Start a blog.
Create lead magnets.
Build funnels.
Set up automations.
Launch email sequences.
Track open rates.
Create subscriber growth systems.
Before you’ve even written twenty blog posts.
For me?
No thank you.
My Blogs Work Differently
Not every blog is built the same way.
I run content websites.
Hobby blogs.
Interest blogs.
Passion projects.
Some are seasonal.
Some are evergreen.
Some exist because I genuinely enjoy creating them.
I do not personally want to run every website like a corporate marketing department.
I want to write.
Create.
Build.
Experiment.
Publish ideas.
My traffic strategy focuses more heavily on:
- Search engines
- Helpful evergreen content
- Internal linking
- Digital products
- Building strong content libraries
That works for me.
Hobby Blogs Do Not Need To Become Full Sales Funnels
There is a strange pressure online that every blog must become:
Newsletter.
Course.
Membership.
Community.
Automated funnel.
Complex backend systems.
But hobby blogging still exists.
Passion blogging still exists.
Creating simply because you enjoy it still exists.
Not every blog needs to become a full-time business model.
Sometimes writing is enough.
Double The Systems Does Not Always Mean Double The Growth
An email list adds work.
Lead magnets.
Subscriber management.
Writing newsletters.
Compliance.
Automations.
Maintenance.
For some bloggers that effort creates incredible results.
For me?
I would rather spend that time creating another helpful article.
Or another Pinterest pin.
Or building another content asset.
My energy goes into publishing.
Not managing inboxes.
New Bloggers Already Feel Overwhelmed
This is one of the biggest reasons I talk openly about this.
New bloggers already have enough to learn.
WordPress.
SEO.
Pinterest.
Writing.
Content planning.
Plugins.
Website setup.
Analytics.
Adding email marketing immediately often creates pressure that simply does not need to exist.
Build the blog first.
Build traffic.
Build confidence.
The rest can come later.
Or not at all.
Blogging Success Does Not Have One Formula
Email marketing absolutely works.
For some bloggers it becomes a major income source.
Especially bloggers focused on:
- Courses
- Coaching
- Memberships
- Services
- Community-led businesses
But blogging success is not one-size-fits-all.
My approach works because it matches how I like to create.
Simple.
Content-focused.
Sustainable.
Build The Blog You Actually Want To Run
That matters most.
Not what a guru says.
Not what social media says.
Not what someone else’s business model says.
Build the blog that works for your life.
Your goals.
Your energy.
Your style.
For me?
That means no email list.
And after years of blogging —
I am perfectly happy with that decision.
Plant the idea.
Write the post.
Grow your blog your way 🌷
